Day 24: Upper Lake to Fish Creek (38 miles)

8/16/15

Morning in Upper Lake camp was much better than the previous night, no wind trying to relocate my tent back to Canada. This morning’s ride out of camp would take me up over Red Rock pass making Divide crossing #7. Even though I was traveling due east, this crossing of the Continental Divide took me into the Pacific side of the divide and into Idaho.

Just before crossing the Divide I passed Hell Roaring Creek. There was a sign explaining how this was the heads water of the Missouri river. This creek was certainly not “Hell Roaring” either.

Several miles after crossing into Idaho I briefly met civilization again and saw one of my favorite meal stops, a Subway. However, this particular Subway is closed on Sunday’s so I grabbed a burger at the restaurant next door. Before leaving civilization again I had to get some supplies and most importantly, new reading glasses because I’m unable to read anything on the map without help.

Today’s route offers an alternate by-passing what is called the Warm River trail. The Warm River trail is an old rail bed and is also infamous among Divide rides that the trail consists of very soft volcanic soils and has been beat to heck from a ton of four-wheeler traffic.

Once I reached the point where the alternate route spurs off the main, here came a group of dirt bikes and quads up the Warm River Trail. My decision made… I’m taking the alternate even though its 17.5 miles longer and the map elevation profile indicates pretty good climb is involved.

About 5.5 miles into the alternate route I stopped for the night at a nice little camp spot by a river. Very peaceful and a good place to wash off today’s road grime.
